Following the advertisement Earlier this month, Real-time Location Sharing is rolling out more widely in Google Messages for Android.
Once it’s available, you’ll notice that the “more” menu in conversations has a dot. There is a new “Real Time Location” pill that has a green icon. It stands out from all other accessory options.
Google has retained the previous sharing option that creates a Google Maps link as a “Single Location.”

Tapping brings up a live map that you can expand to take up most of the screen. The card at the bottom indicates what you’re sharing with a drop-down menu to select: For 1 hour, Today only, Until you turn this off, or Custom duration.
“Send” will add a real-time map to the conversation thread that the recipient can expand. The recipient will see “See my location in real time” as a message notification.
On the privacy front, there is a prominent banner below the app bar indicating whether location sharing is being done and up to what time.
We’re seeing extensive beta and stable availability of Google Messages real-time location over the past few days.

To inform people about this feature, Google identifies it with a colon. To remove both, someone must share their location with you. For some reason it doesn’t disappear if you’re the only one sharing it.
This is a mistake or a fun growth hack that is kind of funky.
