Fantasy adventure shows are always fun to watch, especially when you’re in the mood for an exciting weekend binge that provides an escape from the real world: heroic journeys, unique landscapes, companionship and epic battle action plus mythical creatures, magical abilities and ancient prophecies. I totally agree. Just show me where to sit.
My top pick is the longest-running live-action fantasy horror series on television, with a whopping 15 seasons. Next up is an epic adventure that offers a fun and light-hearted take on one of the oldest sorcery legends and myths in history, followed by the journey of an unexpected warrior turned hero. Commit to your weekend binge with these 3 shows on Amazon Prime Video.
The outpost
An unexpected warrior emerges
Four seasons and 49 episodes. adventure and fantasy series originated on The CW, The outpost It follows the sole survivor of a race called “Blackbloods” as she sets out to track down her family’s killers. It features the classic revenge plot but without all the superfluous distractions of big-budget Hollywood fantasy productions.
Years after his entire village was destroyed by a band of brutal mercenaries, Talon (The Librarians: The Next Chapter(Jessica Green) travels to a lawless fortress on the edge of the civilized world in search of revenge. On the way to this outpost, he discovers that he is in possession of a mysterious supernatural power that he must learn to harness if he is to save himself and defend the world against a fanatical religious dictator.
The fast-paced fantasy adventure is comparable to Xena: Warrior Princess and involves high-stakes politics, magical powers, and escapist, fight-filled fun, with a little cheese thrown in for good measure. No big-budget CGI here. Just compelling revenge plots that expand into a larger story. The show offers a back-to-basics fantasy experience reminiscent of ’90s shows, but set in an intriguing world with unique monsters and a great deep story element.
Merlin
Someone keeps a big secret in Camelot
If you are depressed about something epic historical fiction full of witchcraft and action, Merlin is a family-friendly retelling of the legend of King Arthur that focuses heavily on Merlin and Arthur’s origins, as well as their relationship.
After arriving in Camelot, a medieval kingdom where magic is punishable by death under King Uther Pendragon (Buffy the vampire slayer‘s Anthony Head), young Merlin (Humans‘Colin Morgan) seeks to hone his sorcery skills while keeping them a secret. He soon becomes a simple servant to a young Prince Arthur (Medici: The Magnificent‘s Bradley James) and ward of the royal court physician, Gaius (One foot in the grave‘s Richard Wilson), who takes Merlin under his wing and helps him navigate the dangers of the royal court. Over five seasons, Merlin and Arthur go from mutual disdain to trusted friends and allies, with the mythical witcher guiding the future king to his destiny.
The light-hearted fantasy series, though a bit slow during the first season but quickly ramping up, features a solid blend of adventure and humor with strong character growth and an engaging bromance between the series’ leads. Here, Camelot is completely reinvented and Merlin’s powers are hidden, making for a refreshing and comforting watch compared to the gritty atmosphere of modern fantasy shows.
Supernatural
He X-Files meets Buffy the vampire slayer
With more than 300 episodes, Supernatural is the longest-running fantasy horror series to date. Jared Padalecki (Gilmore Girls) and Jensen Ackles (the boys) play demon-hunting brothers who also fight ghosts, monsters, and fallen gods across America in a 1967 Chevy Impala. It has 20-inch blades because they’re balls? You’ll have to look and see for yourself.
While facing the death of their mother and friends at the hands of supernatural beings, brothers Sam (Padalecki) and Dean (Ackles) Winchester follow in the footsteps of their missing father and set out to hunt down paranormal threats. However, the highlight of the series is their brotherly bond and their willingness to sacrifice everything to save each other, placing great emphasis on the show’s overall theme that family is not only marked by blood but also by choice.
What begins as an episodic monster-of-the-week show quickly morphs into season-long arcs involving apocalyptic events, the actual apocalypse, heaven, hell, and God himself. It features really great scares, intense character development, and an evolving story that balances emotional stakes with high-stakes supernatural threats. Considering its unique blend of horror, drama, urban legends, and humor, it’s no wonder the show has lasted for so long and amassed the passionate community of fans that it has. Plus, it has a great classic rock soundtrack, perfect for a road trip in a ’67 Chevy.
