Later this year, Apple will introduce an updated version of the Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips: a long-awaited update. The current Mac Studio, released in early 2025, includes an M4 Max and M3 Ultra chip, so at least at the high end, it’s quite a bit behind.
According Bloomberg’s Mark Gurmanthe one based on M5 Mac Studiowhich should simply be a chip update, is still on track to launch this year. Looking ahead to 2028, more interesting changes may be in the works.
If you have been on the market for a Mac StudioI’m sure you’ve felt enough pain already. Between incredibly long wait times due to a increase in demand and lack of helpthe fact that the computer is already dated with the M3 Ultra chip and the fact that now you will have to endure much higher prices thanks to the recent price increase.
Luckily, things should be improving, at least slightly.
The M5 update will arrive later this year
I know, stop me if you’ve heard this before, but a new Mac Studio should arrive soon. Reports last year indicated that this update should have been on the market around WWDC. That went out the window once the memory crisis hit, but still, a longer wait is never fun.
Fortunately, your wait should be over soon, as the M5 Ultra version “will expire this year,” according to Mark Gurman. There won’t be any type of design overhaul with this new design, just new chips. However, the next iteration could be a different story.
M7 Ultra in 2028
In 2028, Apple has some more interesting changes in the works for Mac Studiowhich should be equipped with the M7 Ultra. In case you missed it, Apple is supposedly skipping all high-end chips in the M6 family, so there will be a basic M6 but no M6 Pro, Max or Ultra. Of the report:
There are two Mac Studio updates in the works from Apple: an M5 Ultra version expected this year and an M7 Ultra update expected in 2028. I’m told Apple has also been working on internal changes to the high-powered desktop, including a better heatsink to improve thermal performance as the machine takes on more demanding on-device AI workloads. I don’t expect a major redesign, at least not with the M5 Ultra model.
A better heatsink is definitely a welcome addition for anyone already boosting their efforts. Mac Studio to its limits, although it is not clear whether this change refers to the M5 Ultra model or the M7 Ultra model.
Gurman also mentioned the possibility of the M7 Ultra model receiving a redesign, although he also noted that Apple tends to stick with desktop designs for a long time.
