Google has a new way to update your Pixel’s system sounds

Google has a new way to add new system sounds to Pixel phones without needing to update the system. seen by 9to5Google, It appears that a new app called Pixel Audio Services adds new system sounds through the Play Store instead of a full system update.

Some audio can already be easily swapped; you can set the audio you want as a ringtoneFor example. But other sounds, like the noises your phone makes when you lock and unlock it or plug it in to charge, are part of your phone’s system files. Examining the Pixel Audio Services app, we discovered that you can install new sounds via APEX filesAnd since the app is updated through the Play Store, Google could use it to offer new sounds whenever it wants, rather than just in Android updates.

It’s not immediately obvious why Google wanted an alternative way to update system sounds on Pixel phones, but it could have something to do with custom Pixel themes that overhaul multiple parts of the UI at once, including sounds.

Until now, the Pixel themes available have been branded promotional collaborations advertising media properties like Wicked and spongebob. Pixel Audio Services may be laying the groundwork for a more regular theme release cadence, ideally including more customizable and unbranded options. But we still don’t know for sure.
