Pan’s Labyrinth It turns 20 this year, though its stunning art (and themes condemning far-right politics) remain as timeless as ever. To celebrate, Guillermo del ToroThe fantastic classic will have a theatrical presentation in 4K, in 2D and 3D versions, courtesy of Cineverse and Fathom Entertainment. That will arrive on October 9. But even before, Insight Editions is releasing a pair of commemorative books that look almost as beautiful as the film itself.
First is Pan’s Labyrinth: the complete scriptwith a prologue by director Baz Luhrmann, plus an introduction by del Toro himself. As expected, this won’t just be a bound copy of the script; will also include “a wide range of materials from the film’s production, including new, specially commissioned art by visual artist Tomás Jr., original concept art, and storyboards. From early visual designs to moments captured during filming, the book traces the development of the story’s characters, settings, and atmospheres, revealing how the film’s distinctive blend of fantasy and historical drama came to life.”
It will cost $50 and will arrive on September 8. Here’s a look at some of its contents:
The other Insight volume is Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth: Inside the Making of a Modern Fairy Tale—Twentieth Anniversary Edition. It is described as a “revised and expanded” version that includes a foreword by Steven Spielberg and a new preface by Del Toro.
Inside the creation of a modern fairy tale “explores the creative journey of the film, from the director’s first ideas to the casting, the challenging shoot, and the overwhelmingly positive critical response. Along with the concept art and cinematography, there are exclusive insights from the director, stars, producers, and other key players involved in the creation of this dark and thrilling masterpiece.”
This book costs $60 and will be released on September 8, although superfans may want to consider the limited edition version. There are only 500 available, and the first 100 come signed by Del Toro ($350; unsigned versions are $175). It comes bound in an elegant slipcase with an even more elegant slipcase and includes “a matching portfolio containing four prints produced exclusively for Insight Editions by Tomás Jr., as well as two facsimiles of concept art by Raúl Monge and Sergio Sandoval, and two facsimile pages of Esther Gili’s Book of Crossroads, used in the film.”
