sony has announced that it will begin to close the games station Store for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in phases, starting in August 2026 and ending in July 2027, as detailed in a PlayStation blog post.
Once stores close in a specific market, users will no longer be able to make new digital purchases on either platform. The announcement was made on July 1, 2026. The closures will be implemented region by region rather than being a single global limit.
When will PS3 and PS Vita stores close?
Sony has announced a schedule for the closure of its PlayStation Store for older consoles. The PS3 store will close in Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua starting in August 2026. In other countries in Latin America and the Middle East, the PS3 store will close later in 2026. For all other regions, the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita will close in July 2027.
This phased approach means that players in different regions will have different final purchase dates depending on where they purchase the content.
Following the closure of a store in a given market, PS3 and PS Vita owners will no longer be able to purchase new games digitally, purchase DLC, expansion content or add-ons through the store, or purchase digital editions of games that are only available through the store.
Sony has not announced any changes to the following capabilities in the July 1 update: redownload previously purchased content, which typically remains accessible after store closures on older platforms; play games that have already been purchased and downloaded; or use PS Plus and other subscription services on affected platforms.
Users should watch for follow-up announcements from Sony for details on download options once stores are closed.
What players can access after closure
Sony explained in a post on the PlayStation Blog that they understand this news may be disappointing for PS3 and PS Vita players who feel strongly connected to this generation of gaming.
They emphasized that PS3 and PS Vita were important parts of PlayStation history, making this a difficult decision. As the company continues to focus on expanding the PlayStation experience on the newer devices most users play on today, they say they need to allocate more resources to providing the best gaming experiences on these platforms while planning for the future.
For PS3 and PS Vita users who want to retain access to digital content, the steps required vary depending on regional time. First, check the local closing date: users in Mexico, Honduras or Nicaragua must act by August 2026.
In other countries in Latin America and the Middle East, the deadline is late 2026, while most other regions have until July 2027. To prepare, consider purchasing the digital games, DLC, or add-ons you want before the store closes in your area, as new purchases will not be possible afterward.
Pre-download any previously purchased content to your console to avoid losing access if the download infrastructure changes later. If you’re enrolled in PlayStation Plus, back up your save data to the cloud; Alternatively, use external media, if supported, to protect your progress independently of Sony’s servers.
For physical copies, such as games on Blu-ray or Vita cartridges, they will continue to be playable after digital stores close. Finally, users purchasing digital content in the final months before the regional shutdown should be aware that customer support availability and refund policies may become more limited as the shutdown approaches.
The PlayStation 3 was the first console to feature the PlayStation Store when it launched in 2006. Its closure marks the end of a 20-year history for the store on that platform. This is the first time that Sony has closed a digital store for its legacy consoles.
Similar store closures have occurred on competing platforms in recent years:
- Nintendo closed the Wii U and 3DS eShops in 2023, while
- Microsoft closed the Xbox 360 Store in 2024.
PlayStation Store on PS Vita will remain available until July 2027 in most markets. This expands store availability in conjunction with the global closure of the PS3 store for regions not affected by previous closures.
Both platforms shared a store infrastructure and will retire together outside of initial launches in Latin America and the Middle East.
How this fits into Sony’s broader PlayStation shift
The store closure announcement follows other recent decisions by Sony affecting PlayStation users:
- Sony announced on July 1 that it will end physical disc production for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028, moving all new releases to digital-only distribution.
- Sony has announced plans to remove hundreds of movies and TV shows purchased on Studio Canal from users’ libraries due to expiring content licensing agreements.
Taken together, the changes point to a broader push by Sony to consolidate services around current-generation platforms and digital delivery. Users of older Sony hardware should expect continued changes to store availability, media library access, and support windows as Sony continues to shift resources to newer devices.
Sony has not announced a broader plan for legacy console support beyond store closures. Users can check the PlayStation Blog for follow-up announcements about the availability of new downloads and support for previously purchased content.
