anthropic has updated how Claude five hour session limits They apply during peak hours, starting this week. During periods of high demand, subscription users may exhaust their five-hour session allotment in less than five hours of real time. However, the weekly usage limits remain the same.
The change was announced by Thariq Shihiparmember of Anthropic’s technical team, in a social media post. “To manage the increasing demand for Claude, we are adjusting our five-hour session limits for free, Pro, and Max subscriptions during peak hours. Their weekly limits are not affected,” Shihipar explained.
How Claude’s Tight Session Limits Work
Anthropic adjusts session limits based on token usage instead of clock time. During peak hours, the symbolic cost of each session is higher, meaning that a five-hour allocation can be consumed more quickly than five hours of actual activity.
Peak hours are defined as 05:00 to 11:00 PT (13:00 to 19:00 GMT). Outside of these hours, a five-hour session works as usual, covering five hours of access. Anthropic has increased capacity during off-peak hours to compensate for this change, keeping total weekly limits unchanged.
According to Shihipar, about 7 percent of users will encounter session limits that they would not have reached under the previous system. Users subscribed to the Pro level are more likely to be affected.
Those running token-heavy background tasks can reduce the impact by move those workloads to off-peak hours.
The adjustment applies to Free subscribers, Pro at $20 per month, Max 5x at $100 per month, and Max 20x at $200 per month. API clients are billed according to published per-token rates and are not affected by the same session limit structure.
Why Claude’s session limits remain unreleased
Anthropic does not disclose the exact token counts that correspond to your session limits. The company’s documentation mentions that usage depends on factors such as the length and complexity of the conversation, the functions used, and the Claude model chosen, but does not specify explicit thresholds. As a result, subscribers cannot predict in advance how many interactions their session allocation will cover.
Users can track their consumption. through a board showing your progress toward a five-hour daily session limit and weekly usage limit. If a limit is exceeded, access is blocked until the window is reset or additional use is purchased.
Shihipar acknowledged that this change could be detrimental to some users. He said: “I know this was frustrating. We continue to invest in scaling efficiently and I will keep you updated on progress.” Anthropic has not provided a timeline for capacity expansions that would allow it to lift peak hour restrictions.
