that title is Fallout: New Vegasthe 2010 entry made by storied RPG studio Obsidian Entertainment during the gap between Bethesda’s 2008 release consequences 3 and its direct sequel, from 2015. consequences 4 (A little game was played between them called Skyrim (you may have heard of it).

But while Lobe says he felt like “it’s a little unfair that they judged us for not having the stories (that New Vegas had),” he made it clear that he still greatly enjoys and respects New Vegas, thinks Obsidian did a great job with the RPG, and even wishes Fallout 3’s story and writing had similar depth and nuance.
“But that being said… Obsidian killed it. I think they did a beautiful job, and it made me feel a little sad that our design team couldn’t imagine the same kind of… maybe they just didn’t have the time or bandwidth. They just didn’t implement the same scale of really ambitious ‘huge arc, multiple options’ stuff.”
When Lobe sought input from some of the other developers present on the podcast, former Bethesda artist Nate Purkeypile said he really likes New Vegas, but thinks it stumbles with the dungeons and world design.
“I think Vegas is a really good game, but it also does some things worse. I think its dungeons and world design aren’t as good,” he said. “So from a writing and design perspective, I think they did it better, but I don’t feel the same about their dungeons.”
Lobe, however, raised another valuable point: Obsidian had to develop New Vegas in a very short time frame of only 18 months. “We should also say that they had a limited amount of time to work in. They were very pressed for time – an unfair amount of time, honestly.”
I love New Vegas to bits, but it’s true that Bethesda’s work on the foundation that Obsidian built it on tends to go unnoticed, and it shouldn’t. That being said, Fallout 3 was also incredibly well received.
In the end, both games are fantastic RPGs, so I’m excited to play them. the next remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas that we know are coming. Haven’t you seen the games yet? All Fallout titles are playable on Xbox and PC via Xbox Game Pass.
