TL;DR
- Google Wallet users are experiencing an issue with the app.
- Several reports claim that a technical issue is causing the app to flash violently, rendering it unusable.
- Google says it has identified the issue and started rolling out a fix.
If you have noticed that something strange is happening with the Google Wallet app recently, you are not alone. A large number of users have encountered a technical problem that prevents them from using the application. The good news is that Google is already working to fix it.
A flood of reports is hitting Reddit (1, 2, 3, 4) and Google support site about an issue with the Wallet app. Specifically, these users point out a glitch that causes the app to flash violently when trying to open with biometric unlocking tools, such as the fingerprint sensor. While most of the reports come from Samsung Galaxy owners, the issue also affects some Nothing Phone users. You can see an example of the error in the GIF below.

If you are also experiencing this error, don’t worry, it should be resolved soon. A Google spokesperson says Android Authority“We have identified an issue that was causing the Google Wallet screen to flicker for a small number of users and have begun rolling out a fix.”

Google has also offered some troubleshooting tips for those experiencing problems. A Reddit user who contacted Google about the issue claims to have received the following response from the company’s support team:
Thank you for your patience while I consulted with our technical team about the issues you have been experiencing with the Google Wallet app.
To help resolve this, try the following troubleshooting steps in order:
- Restart your device – This often resolves temporary system crashes.
- Check for software updates: Go to Settings > Software Update > Download and install to make sure your phone is running the latest operating system.
- App updates: Open the Play Store and make sure the Google Wallet app and Google Play services are fully updated.
If the problem persists, try clearing the app’s temporary data:
- Force stop and clear cache: Go to Settings > Apps > Wallet > Force stop, then select Storage > Clear cache.
- Clear app data: If the cache is not working, select Clear data (Note: you may need to sign in again or re-add your cards after this step).
- Reinstall: Uninstall the Google Wallet app and reinstall it from the Play Store.
Sometimes specific screen or system settings can interfere with the app:
- Display settings: Try temporarily turning off adaptive refresh rate or motion smoothness (Settings > Display > Motion smoothness > Standard).
- Developer Options: If you have Developer Options enabled, make sure “Show Surface Updates” or “Hardware Overlays” are disabled.
- Safe Mode: Try opening the app in safe mode to see if a third-party app is causing a conflict.
Make sure your Google account is syncing correctly. In extreme cases, deleting and re-adding your Google account to the device may refresh the connection to Google services.
