At the time of writing, the release of the feverishly anticipated Crimson Desert, one of the biggest and most ambitious titles of 2026, and a game with enough buzz to rival GTA 6, is now less than 24 hours away on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Mac, and PS5.
Unsurprisingly, almost everyone is rushing to read reviews and place their last-minute pre-orders. If this is you, I have good news: the Steam version of Crimson Desert is available for $60.99 loaded right now, which means you can get the big $70 open-world fantasy adventure for almost $10 off at launch. The more expensive $80 Deluxe Edition is also just $69.99 loadedalso!
What developer Pearl Abyss set out to achieve with Crimson Desert is nothing short of wildly ambitious: a gigantic open-world action-adventure experience that has everything from intense, skillful combat sequences and boss fights to rich and varied side quests, magical and deeply rewarding secrets to discover, and everything in between.
In fact, it has been marketed as the game of your dreams, the ultimate fantasy adventure that will leave you drowning in fun content to interact with as you navigate the rich and vibrant world of Pywel. It sounds too good to be true… and if Crimson Desert’s reviews are anything to go by, it appears that, at least in some respects, it is. In others, however, it absolutely exploits its potential.
As my Crimson Desert review roundup As an example, the game has achieved an overall metacritic score of 78/100. “Generally favorable”, sure, but far from the 90s and the “universal acclaim” that many expected to see. Its open-world combat, exploration, and discovery have been widely praised, although the main story and many of its side quests have been criticized for their poor structuring and bland objectives.
In case you were wondering, Windows Central also reviewed Crimson Desert; My colleague Michael Hoglund was the first member of our staff to dive into Pywel and play the epic fantasy of Pearl Abyss, and he gave the game a glowing four and a half star review. It also gave it our “Must Play” badge.
“Crimson Desert is the kind of game that usually only comes around once in a generation, so singular in its ambition that it will define the gaming conversation for weeks, if not months, to come. Despite the granular errors, Pearl Abyss has shown what freedom of play really means,” he wrote, also calling it an “unforgettable” experience. “What Pearl Abyss has created is wonderful and should be celebrated in every way.”
All in all, Crimson Desert stands out as one of those rare and incredibly ambitious titles that grabs everyone’s attention, even if it failed to land in terms of its narrative structure, quest design, and open-world activities. Still, the general consensus is that it remains a good gameand it’s worth checking out.
You can get it for just $60.99 loaded or the Deluxe Edition for $69.99 loaded thanks to these incredible introductory offers. Place a last-minute pre-order so you can pre-load it and start enjoying it the moment it comes out? I have you covered with Crimson Desert Exact Release Date and Release Times.
No, Crimson Desert is not a multiplayer title. It’s a single-player experience, meaning you’ll explore the vast lands of Pywel on your own.
No! Pearl Abyss may have created Black Desert Online in 2017 and Crimson Desert may be set in the same universe as that game, but it’s a completely separate single-player title.
Crimson Desert is not available to play Xbox Game Passwhich will undoubtedly disappoint subscribers of Microsoft’s gaming service.
Crimson Desert is similar to Soulslikes in that melee attacks and timed dodges are central to the game, although it lacks Souls mechanics such as “bonfire” checkpoints or regaining lost experience at the location where you died. In short, it is an action and adventure game, not a Soulslike.
Crimson Desert has some RPG elements such as creating and upgrading equipment, but lacks the genre’s hallmarks such as impactful dialogue options, leveling systems, and “building” a character. It’s more of an action-adventure game than a true action RPG.
