In June, Steven Spielberg will return to science fiction with Disclosure Day. Before that, the Jacob Burns Film Center in New York wants to honor the filmmaker with a screening series celebrating his genre work focusing on video games, technology and, of course, aliens.
Starting on Saturday, May 9, the Center will screen a different Spielberg science fiction film over the weekend. things start with Artificial intelligence AI (May 9 and 10)so Minority report (May 16 and 17), eastern time (May 23-25), W.ar of the worlds (May 30 and 31)and Ready player one (June 6 and 7). For fans of the format, screenings of War, AI, and Minority It will be presented in 35 mm.
after jumping Disclosure days opening week (June 12-14), series concludes June 20 and 21 with Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Each screening will have a discussion led by leading film scholars who will take the audience through the themes and cultural impact of an individual film. As the Center put it, Spielberg uses the science fiction genre to “combine his fundamental strengths as a filmmaker with the incomparable sense of imagination that makes him a truly singular storyteller.”
For anyone in the area, the screenings are as good a reason as any to revisit that part of Spielberg’s filmography and see how they reflect Divulgation, while non-New Yorkers can have their own marathon of these movies at home.
