Google has begun to be implemented near real-time voice translation on Google Meet for Android and iOS apps, following a previous release of the web version.
The feature converts spoken audio to the participant’s preferred language during a call. The mobile launch began on April 8 for quick release domains, and scheduled release domains will follow on April 23.
Supported languages and how it works
Voice translation currently supports two-way translation between English and five other languages: Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Italian. When enabled, the feature translates incoming audio in near real-time without requiring participants to switch apps or use separate tools.
At launch, two limitations apply. Only one language pair can be active in a single meeting, so all participants share the same translation address. Currently it is not possible for one participant to translate into Spanish while another translates into French in the same call. Users joining from dedicated conference room hardware can hear others’ translated audio, but their own speech will not be translated for the rest of the room.
Google has indicated that improvements to the user interface and translation accuracy will continue to be made over time.
Who can use Google Meet voice translation?
Currently, voice translation in Google Meet is available only for certain account types:
- Google Workspace Business Standard and Business Plus, as well as Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus
- Workspace Frontline Plus and subscribed personal Google accounts Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra
The feature is not offered on free Google accounts or entry-level Workspace plans. Google hasn’t provided a timeline for when it will be more widely available.
