After beta testing over the last few weeks and monthsGoogle Messages officially announced today Mentions and the Trash file.
Mentions was first shown off earlier this month with other new Android features, but Google today announced the “launch of Mentions in Google Messages” to ensure that “the right person finds your message right when they need it.”
When you mention someone in an RCS group chat using @, you “receive a notification, even if the chat is muted.”
This helps everyone find and read relevant messages, which promotes greater participation in group discussions.
You can @ mention multiple people in a message, while Google allows you to edit “recipient’s saved name in real time” from the text field:
For example, changing “@ToddNextDoor” to “@Todd
Google also announced today the Trash folder that replaces the immediate Delete action with “Move to Trash”. There is also a quick “Undo” option.
Conversations in the Trash are not emptied for 30 days. (On Android Go phones, it’s 7 days “to save space.”) You can find the Trash under File in the profile menu in the top right corner. From here, there are:
- One-touch restore: If you change your mind, you can easily restore threads from the Trash folder to your main inbox with the full history intact.
- Full control: If you want it gone forever, you can still permanently empty your Trash at any time.
Despite the announcement, we still don’t see this being widely implemented.
