Google Messages starts rolling out ‘Tap to draft’ for smart replies

As previously we sawGoogle Messages is adding a new “Tap to Draft” behavior that saves you from accidental smart replies.

Going to Message Settings > Suggestions reveals a new preference under Smart Reply. The description to the left of the switch is the current behavior. (Would benefit from a clearer settings interface.)

  • Tap to send– Tap Smart Replies to send a message instantly
  • Tap to write– Tap Smart Replies to update your draft message.

The default setting remains “Tap to Send” with this initial deployment. The new “Tap to Draft” places the suggestion in the text field so you can edit it further before sending it. Add a nice second step to avoid accidental sends.

We’re looking at Tap to compose with beta version 20260303_00_RC00 from Google Messages. It is not on the stable channel yet.
