As Meta continues its push into smart glasses, the company is apparently preparing to launch a pair of Ray-Ban smart glasses designed specifically for those who already wear prescription glasses.
Bloomberg reports that Meta plans to launch two new pairs of AI smart glasses with “rectangular and rounded styles” that would be designed specifically for those requiring prescription lenses.
Prescription lenses can already be added to existing Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, but apparently these new models would be designed especially for that use case. It’s unclear how they might differ, but we speculate battery life and frame thickness/weight could be part of the equation. Again, that’s just a guess.
These new models would apparently be sold through “traditional prescription glasses channels.”
The edge reports that these two new models, “Scriber” and “Blazer,” arrived at the FCC filings with the note that they are production models, suggesting that their release will happen sooner rather than later. Those presentations also reveal that “Blazer” would be available in a larger size and that the glasses will support the UNII-4 Wi-Fi 6 band, something existing models do not support. That suggests internal improvements, and this particular band is good for high-speed data transfers, perhaps for use in live broadcasts.
It is also observed by Bloomberg that Mark Zuckerberg said during a Meta earnings call that “billions of people use glasses or contact lenses to correct vision” and that “it’s hard to imagine a world several years from now where the majority of glasses people wear are not AI glasses,” possibly hinting at this release.
There’s no hint of a screen on these glasses, although it’s not what you’d expect.
