Foldable phones are a hot topic in 2026, and if there is a brand Apple It may end up competing with it when it launches its first foldable device later this year, it may not be Samsung but Motorola.
Samsung has been making foldable phones and selling them in the US for over seven years and, to be fair, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 It represents a significant step forward with its slimmer design, wider bezel display and internal updates. So if someone had to guess which brand sells the most foldable phones in the US, most people would probably say Samsung.
However, that assumption may be wrong. Two IDC analysts, Francisco Jerónimo and Nabila Popal, got to work with the Motorola Razr foldable in CMM 2026 last week. While sharing their impressions of Motorola’s first book-style foldable, they also revealed some surprising statistics about the US foldable market.
Article continues below.
According to IDC analysts, Motorola accounts for about 50% of the foldable phone market in the US, driven largely by its Razr foldable-style device (via 9to5Google).
The company also maintains strong momentum in other regions, with IDC noting that Motorola controls about 55% of the foldable market in Latin America. Globally, Motorola’s share is also growing, rising from around 6% to more than 14%.
Analysts didn’t specify exactly why Motorola leads the foldable device market in the US, but price is likely to play a big role. Motorola’s foldable devices are typically more affordable compared to Samsung’s devices, often ranging from $900 to around $3000, especially with models like the Galaxy Z Fold line and the Galaxy Z triple.
Motorola is currently primarily focused on clamshell-style foldable devices, but that is expected to change soon. The company is preparing to launch its first folding book, the Razr Fold, in the United States later this year. While the price is yet to be revealed, we can only assume that it will further strengthen Motorola’s position in the foldable segment.
These figures are honestly surprising. I always assumed that Samsung would be the main competitor that Apple would face when it launched its Foldable iPhone coming later this yearbut it looks like Motorola may actually be the biggest rival in the US market. Either way, it seems likely that we will see significant growth in foldable phone sales in the US this year.
