Perplexity’s Comet AI Browser Launches on iPhone with Built-in Assistant

Perplexity has been deployed Kiteits new AI-powered browser, in the App Store for iPhone users. The app, originally scheduled for release on March 11, arrived about a week later than expected. Currently, there is no version available for iPad.

Like most browsers on iOS, Comet uses WebKit because Apple requires it, so it does not stand out for rendering speed or performance. Instead, the browser emphasizes what happens after a page loads, integrating Perplexity’s response engine directly alongside web content.

What Perplexity’s Comet AI Browser Does on iPhone

The main feature of the browser is a useful AI assistant which works together with your open pages. You can ask questions about what you’re reading, get quick summaries, or pull out specific details, all without leaving the site. The assistant knows which tab you are on and can discuss its content in real time.

Voice mode is built-in, so you can say your questions out loud and get answers instantly, without typing.

For different types of searches, the browser uses a hybrid approach. Simple queries, such as sports scores or local business information, get simple results. More complex questions are handled by Comet Assistant, which uses Perplexity’s answer engine and cites your sources.

There is also a deep research feature that scans multiple web sources at once and provides summary answers with references.

Additionally, the wizard can perform multi-step tasks on its own. For example, you can open a calendar event, search for meeting invitations on LinkedIn and the web, and even prepare a summary with suggested questions—all without needing to jump between apps.

Research threads and browsing history sync seamlessly between the iOS app and the desktop version of Comet. This means you can start a task on your laptop and pick up right where you left off on your iPhone, all without losing context.

Perplexity collects Comet browsing and search history to create targeted ad profiles. The company has not offered an option to opt out of this data collection within the app. Comet is available for free download, with additional paid levels. So far, Perplexity has not announced any plans for an iPad version.
