Samsung is unplugging his Galaxy Z triplethe three-screen folding phone that it launched just three months ago. The company will begin by suspending sales in South Korea and then gradually reduce availability in the US and other markets as remaining stock runs out, Bloomberg reports. A Samsung spokesperson confirmed the decision.
Samsung’s website no longer lists the device for future restocks; is now marked as “exhausted.” However, some units are still available at Samsung Experience Stores in Frisco, Texas and Queens, New York, according to reports from Reddit and social media users.
Why Samsung is discontinuing the Galaxy Z TriFold
Samsung has not given a clear explanation. The device continued to be sold in $2,899so demand was not the problem. According to Bloomberg, the TriFold was always intended to be more of a technology showcase than a device for long-term production, which makes sense given its limited run.
High manufacturing costs and limited production of TriFold
Manufacturing costs probably play an important role here. The device uses two hinges and unfolds to a 10-inch screen, which means more parts than a typical foldable device. Rising RAM prices have raised production costs across the industry, and Samsung could have remained on tight margins even with its premium price. Increasing the price to cover costs could make the device even less accessible to most buyers.
Where the Galaxy Z TriFold is still available
Some units are still available in some select brick-and-mortar stores, mainly in the US, but it appears to be just leftover stock. Once they disappear, the device is unlikely to appear again.
What the closure of the Galaxy Z TriFold means for buyers
Samsung has not announced any changes to warranty or software support for existing TriFold owners. The company has also not confirmed whether a successor is in the works or if the triple design will return in future models. For now, the remaining US inventory is expected to be depleted without being replenished.
