For all the praise Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 received last summer, its foldable sibling felt a bit like an afterthought. The company made some significant changes to its hardwareslimming the chassis by more than a millimeter while adding a larger battery and expanding its cover display to fill the entire panel. While many of us have been hoping that this year’s Flip 8 will see the kind of transformation Samsung delivered to its book-style foldable, it doesn’t sound too promising so far.
Today’s leak is courtesy of Galaxy Clubwhich updated its coverage of the Galaxy Z Flip 8 today to include basic information about its battery capacity. According to this report, Samsung plans to once again include two cells in its casing: one with a capacity of 1,150 mAh and another with a capacity of 3,024 mAh. That adds up to 4,174 mAh, the same rating currently used by the Flip 7. With Samsung’s latest foldable advertising featuring a typical battery capacity of 4,300 mAh, expect to see that same number appear at the company’s upcoming Unpacked event this summer.
That’s a break in the history of the Flip series, which has seen its battery size slowly increase with almost every generation. The Galaxy Z Flip 3, for example, shipped with a paltry 3,300 mAh capacity, which was bumped up to 3,700 mAh in the Flip 4. After taking a break to focus on its new clamshell display, the Flip 6 returned once again with a larger 4,000 mAh battery, surpassed last year by that of the Flip 7 and, if this leak is correct, that of the Flip 8, with a rating of 4,300 mAh. This pattern may return with next year’s Flip 9, but I doubt it will be very comforting to anyone who was hoping to upgrade to a new clamshell model this year.
However, there may be a positive point here: the size. An early rumor Since last fall it pegged the Galaxy Z Flip 8 with a 10% reduction in both size and weight, which would point to a 12.33mm build when closed along with a weight of just 169 grams. If that’s true, the lack of a battery upgrade is much easier to excuse, just as it was easy to ignore the repeated battery capacity with the Flip 5.
Unfortunately, other rumors are not as exciting; turn 8 could stick to Exynos in all regionswhile Galaxy ClubPrevious reports from Google suggest another update cycle without any hardware changes to its two camera sensors. Hey, at least folding fans. have good company.
