Paul Atreides won. He defeated the emperor of the galaxy and assumed the throne himself. And yet, his victory in the end of Dune: Part Two I didn’t feel particularly triumphant. Paul had to make many, many sacrifices to get to that point, including giving up the love of his life, Chani. And now, in Dune: part threeWe’ll see how that plays out.
The first trailer of the long awaited conclusion to director Denis Villeneuve Dune The trilogy is now available. And, to celebrate the release, the director and members of his cast held an event in Los Angeles to preview what’s to come. The most revealing part was when Villeneuve explained how Dune: part threebased on the second Dune book, Messiah of the duneswill feel, look and sound different than the previous two films.
“I said to myself, it’s a good idea to return to this world, not out of nostalgia but out of urgency. And to go there with a critical eye and with the idea of not being self-indulgent,” Villeneuve said at the event. “I told my team that it will be a very different movie, a very different movie. Dune Movie, with another tone, with another rhythm, with another rhythm. If the first film was more of a contemplation, like a film exploring a new world, and the second is a war film, this is a thriller. It is a more intense and action-packed film, more muscular than the other two, I would say.”

He went on to explain what he meant by it being a thriller. “There’s a span of time, 17 years, where we see Paul dealing with the consequences of having too much power and him trying to figure out how to get out of this cycle of violence,” Villeneuve said. “And of course, he’s an emperor who can see the future, so he’s kind of invincible. And we follow people trying to overthrow him. And it’s a pretty intense story. But at its core, it’s still a love story. The heart of the movie is still the relationship between Paul and Chani. And I’m so excited. I can’t wait to share the movie with you.”
He also means it because, according to Villeneuve, he not only loves Dune: Messiah even more than the original Dune book, but this time he also found something even deeper in it.
“Messiah of the dunes “It’s by far my favorite book in the series,” he said. “It is a very dark book, a beautiful book. And this time I will say that this is one of my most personal films, if not the most personal. That is why it is a very close film to me and very contemporary.”

“It’s about the story of Paul and Chani, them struggling with their relationship, having the burden and the incredible pressure of the world around them,” Villeneuve continued. “And there is something in their love, in their time, in their way of being, in the way their relationship evolved. That study of the relationship of both characters is very personal to me.”
But it is not only Dune: part three More exciting and emotional than the previous two films, it will also look different. You can try the new trailer, but for ThirdVilleneuve changed cinematographers from Greig Fraser (who made the first two) to Linus Sandgren, who made La La Land and There is no time to die.
“(Arrakis) has changed in those years,” Villeneuve said of why he changed cinematographers. “The climate is different. It’s still a desert planet, but there are differences. We’re visiting new scenes, new places. I took the camera to areas of the planet that you haven’t seen before. And we’re also visiting new planets. And I wanted to approach this with a new set of eyes.”

But one of those who will return is the composer Hans Zimmer. His music from the previous two films largely defined what Dune That is to say, Villeneuve knew he had to return with a slight twist. “Hans is already working on the music… But since the film is different, the music would be different,” Villeneuve said. “And it’s something that Hans is very excited about and approaches in the same spirit as the first two films.”
New planets, new relationships, new eyes and new music. It sure sounds like Dune: part three It will be a big departure from the first two films. December can’t come soon enough.
We will have more about Dune: part three soon. The film opens on December 18.
