Nearly six years after the game was originally announced in summer 2020, fans will soon have the chance to get their hands on the highly anticipated survival horror shooter for Xbox and PC. State of Decay 3 for the first time. The sequel to the release of Undead Labs in 2018 State of Decay 2 has been kept almost entirely under wraps, but that’s finally changing.
Next month, Xbox and Undead Labs will host an alpha test of the game, with plans for additional and expanded playtests later this year. Series co-creator Brant Fitzgerald announced this news on a new videowhile explaining that State of Decay 3 has been built around the feedback received about the second game.

Registrations for State of Decay 3 alpha are now available at playtest.stateofdecay.comso if you’re interested in playing the game before its unannounced release date (it doesn’t even have a release window right now), be sure to sign up. When the playtest arrives in May, you’ll probably know whether you’re in or not based on whether or not you receive an email with instructions on how to play.
If you don’t pass the initial test, don’t worry; Fitzgerald says Undead Labs will “keep your name on the roster and have plenty of opportunities for you throughout the year.” Presumably, each new playtest will expand its scope and include more gameplay elements and features for fans to try out.
The wait for this game has been long state of decay fans, especially since we have received almost no news for almost six years and State of Decay 2 stopped receiving updates at the end of 2024. With this in mind, it’s great that players finally have the opportunity to really play iteven if the full launch still seems quite far away.
However, we have no idea when we’ll get a release date for State of Decay 3. We know that “it is going very well” So hopefully one will arrive during this year’s Xbox Games Showcase in the summer. Whenever the game comes out, it will be available to play. Xbox Series|S and Windows PC, as well as on Xbox Game Pass.
