YouTube Shorts will use AI to create avatars that look and sound like you

YouTube now allows users to create a you have an avatar It looks and sounds like them to wear in shorts. This feature was bothered earlier this year.

The creation process is available in the main YouTube app and YouTube Create. It involves capturing a “live selfie” by recording your face and voice (reading some prompts).

This will give you a photorealistic avatar that you can place in your YouTube shorts. Each message-based generation can last up to 8 seconds, although you can create multiple clips in a row. You only have to go through the setup process once, but you can do it again at any time to update your look.

The feature is a continuation of the Google Veo models in YouTube Shorts. Something similar has been possible with the ability to convert ingredients to video, which involves uploading an image, since last year. However, the voice aspect is completely new.

youtube says 9to5Google that “the avatar feature gives users an easier way to safely include themselves in videos.”

For security, the selfie video and voice will only be used for avatar creation, and no one else will be able to use the avatar to create original Shorts. You can delete your avatar at any time (and YouTube will automatically delete after 3 years of non-use), but keep in mind that existing videos featuring your avatar will remain until the actual clip is deleted.

All avatar videos will include watermarks and digital tags, such as SynthID and C2PA, as well as information about AI-generated content.

Once you’ve implemented it, open Create ‘+’ in the YouTube app and tap the Gemini spark in the corner. Select “Create video” in the upper left corner and search for “Make a video with my avatar” to enter your message. It is also available in the menu Remix > Reimagine > Add me to this scene.

This feature will be rolled out starting today globally (outside Europe) for users over 18 years of age, and will be fully available in the coming days. You must be the owner of an existing YouTube channel to create an avatar.
