
Apple’s long list of concessions in the European Union continues, as the company has confirmed that users will be able to install apps through third-party app stores in iPad starting tomorrow September 16th.
That is the same day that iPadOS 18 launches, which means it’s a big day for users of Apple’s tablet line.
Announced through a post on Apple Developer Sitestarting September 16 “EU users can download iPadOS apps in the App Store and through alternative distribution.”

“As mentioned in May, if you have signed the Alternative Terms Addendum for Apps in the EU, the first annual installations of iPadOS will begin to accrue and the lowest commission rate in the App Store will apply.”
“Apple also says alternative browser engines can be used in iPadOS apps,” as it gives up at least some of its dominance following the arrival of the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
iPad users could get Fortnite and more in the EU
In many ways, this is the next logical step after the same principles have already been applied to the iOS platform, but it is still worth noting as this means that iOS, iPadOS and (as always) macOS will now allow downloading, at least in Europe.
Apple was given six months to ensure iPadOS was DMA compliant, and the company confirmed it would do so in May of this year.
The Epic Games Store is available for EU users, which means can install Fortnite on iOSbut the developer has expressed interest in bringing it back to the iPad as well.
