The Insider builds of Windows 11 in early April are a clear sign of where Microsoft wants the operating system to go next. Through UI refinements, new feature changes, and deeper system integrations, these updates show the company is improving the experience ahead of bigger changes expected later in 2026. Some improvements are subtle, others are more ambitious, but together they paint a picture of an operating system that is constantly evolving rather than standing still.
Here’s a closer look at the seven changes Insiders can try out right now and what they hint at for the coming months.
Article continues below.
The biggest improvements to the Windows Insider program in April 2026
These are the improvements that the software giant has implemented since then my latest summary of changes.
1. Haptic feedback effects
Starting with builds 26220.8148 and 26300.8155, Windows 11 adds haptic feedback effects to supported devices for specific actions, such as snapping windows, resizing them, and hovering over the close button.
You can always configure these settings in Settings > bluetooth & Devices > Mouse > Haptic Cues.
2. New Xbox mode name
The company originally began previewing the Xbox Full Screen Experience, which transforms your desktop into a console-like experience using the Xbox app and system tweaks to enhance the gaming experience.
In recent updates, an update was made available to improve the first-run experience when entering the mode. Additionally, and more importantly, Microsoft has now renamed the Xbox Full Screen Experience to xbox mode.
3. Changes to protected print mode
Windows Protected Print Mode isn’t getting any improvements per se. Instead, the company has been testing a new badge icon that will appear on a printer installed on your computer that supports the new printer drivers.
This change is now available in the Dev and Beta channels.
4. Secure Boot Certificate Alerts
In the Windows Security app, the company recently released an update for Secure Boot settings that displays a green, yellow, or red badge indicating the current status of certificates expiring in June 2026.
For example, the green The icon indicates that the system is fully updated, so you don’t need to worry about Secure Boot certificates.
He yellow The icon indicates that the update is pending or limited due to compatibility issues.
He red The icon means that new certificates cannot be applied and manual configuration is required.
These new messages are available in the Windows Security App > Device Security > Secure Bootafter installing the latest preview version in the Canary, Dev and Beta channels.
5. Pen settings improvements
Starting with Canary Channel builds 28020.1803 and 29560, the development team updated the pen settings page, allowing you to configure the back button to launch the same application as the Copilot key.
This new setting can be found at Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen.
6. New touchpad customization settings
On laptops, it is now possible to choose the size of the right-click area on the touchpad.
If you have a compatible touch panel, the new option is available in Settings > Bluetooth and devices > Touch panel, and options include default, little, halfand big.
Also, it is worth noting that some manufacturers may offer their own customization for this. So if your computer is using this customization, you will also see a “Habit” entry in the touch panel settings.
This setup was previously limited to the Dev and Beta channels, but is now available in the Canary Channel with the release of builds 29560 and 28020.1803.
7. Feedback Center App Update
Finally, the company recently released version 2.2604.101.0 of the Feedback Hub app on the Dev and Canary channels, with some improvements.
In the latest app update, Microsoft pushed changes to window behavior so that you have a consistent default startup experience. If you resize the window manually, the app will now remember the size.
You can now use the mouse back button when navigating between pages to go back to a previous page without having to use app controls.
Upvote button now displays correctly for Chinese language and improves accessibility.
Windows Central’s opinion
Microsoft isn’t using the start of April to deliver flashy features, but rather to refine the experience. These changes may seem small, but they are still important because they reflect the company’s ongoing commitment to polishing the operating system.
The introduction of haptic feedback and new touchpad customization highlights the focus on precision of touch input and interaction, especially in modern laptops. At the same time, subtle interface tweaks, like the updated Secure Print Mode badge and Feedback Center improvements, show that the company is paying more attention to clarity and usability rather than simply adding core features.
Perhaps most importantly, changes such as Secure Boot Certificate alerts indicate a greater emphasis on security transparency. Instead of burying critical system states, the operating system is starting to bring them to light in ways that are easier for everyday users to understand before problems arise.
It is important to note that I do not include details about upcoming changes to the Windows internal program and Windows Update settings because they have not been officially released on any preview channels.
