microsoft is removing copilot chat access from Word, Excel, PowerPointand a note for business users without a current Microsoft 365 Copilot license April 15, 2026. The change was detailed in the Microsoft 365 admin center under notification MC1253858.
Rated users Microsoft 365 Business Subscription You currently have access to Copilot Chat in those apps at no additional cost. That access ends April 15 for accounts without the paid Copilot license.
After the outage, unlicensed users will only be able to access Copilot Chat through the standalone system. Microsoft 365 Copilot app. They will no longer be able to access Copilot’s built-in features in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. However, Copilot Chat in Outlook will not be affected. Microsoft 365 Copilot remains a paid add-on license. Pricing details can be found on Microsoft’s commercial licensing pages. The company has not announced any grace period or alternative options for unlicensed users beyond redirecting them to the standalone app.
For many business users, this represents a shift from free AI support within Office apps to a subscription-based model. While basic access to Copilot remains available through a standalone app, the most valuable experience (working directly in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) will now require a subscription.
