T-Mobile is making a change to its network. You’re eliminating some old networking technology and it’s probably for the best.
The company announced in your Network Evolution registry that is preparing to retire its 2G GSM network. T-Mobile says its old 2G network will shut down on August 3, 2026. With 2G preparing to go live, T-Mobile reminds customers that anyone still using that old technology will lose “call forwarding, call waiting, caller ID, or fixed dialing numbers through device settings” on Android and iOS.
Specifically for Android, you would have problems “sending large multimedia messages, such as photos or videos.”
While it may seem strange that T-Mobile still maintained its 2G network, considering its Evolution record says it abandoned 3G (CDMA) in July 2022, an interview with fierce network shed some light on that. T-Mobile network director Ankur Kapoor told the publication that he didn’t want to “leave a group of customers in the lurch.” What’s more, Kapoor tells Fierce Network that he observed many people entering the United States with devices that did not have VoLTE enabled.
However, now T-Mobile has reached a point where customers won’t lose anything by turning off 2G. Kapoor says customers have been notified and anyone still using an older device with 2G has “plenty of time” to migrate to newer phones with 5G.

Android Central’s opinion
I’m sure there are still someone using 2G, right? After all, we live in a big blue world. A quick Google search will tell you how much of a security risk 2G poses compared to the current standard. In a way, T-Mobile is doing us a favor.
As we mentioned, T-Mobile closed its 3G (CDMA) network in 2022, but removed the Sprint version first. The notice in this regard came several months earlier, in 2021, when T-Mobile gave users four months to purchase new devices before the January 1, 2022 deadline. Shortly after, it revealed that it would shut down Sprint’s LTE network on June 30, 2022.
Interestingly, T-Mobile said in 2021 that it would eventually retire its 2G and 3G networks; However, the first only leaves us now, years later.
Let’s also not forget that T-Mobile ends its month of gifts with a pretty unique $60 t-shirt for clients. The latest Members Month benefit is a limited-edition Umbro soccer jersey that customers can get through the T-Life app starting July 7.
