Of all the areas that AI has affected in our daily lives, I think the effect it has had on the improvement of video games seems the most magical. When done correctly, it essentially allows you to play your games at better frame rates without sacrificing visual fidelity. And while some eagle-eyed enthusiasts can spot the difference between a native game and an enhanced one, it’s now getting awfully close.
When the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X was first announced, the technology company promised consumers that it would eventually receive Microsoft’s Auto SR technology. Well, just over six months later, the feature has finally hit the preview branch and you should see up to 30% better frame rates with it enabled.
Asus ROG Xbox Ally X’s Auto SR technology is now ready for preview
Hopefully, it will be ready for general release soon.
As announced in the Microsoft Developer BlogsAuto SR is now ready in the Xbox Insiders branch for Asus ROG Xbox Ally The idea is that you run the game at a lower resolution than normal and Auto SR upscales it as best it can. Ideally, this should mean that you get all the benefits of running a game at a lower resolution without having to do so. seer the game at a lower resolution.
You can see the technology in action above. The left side is the game that runs natively at 1440p on ROG Xbox Ally X and achieves around 35-40 FPS. The right side has the game running at a lower resolution, with SR Auto upscaling up to 1440p. That side runs at a stable 46-50 FPS and if I’m honest, I really struggle to see any visual difference between the two sides. It really seems like you get high FPS and good visual quality at the same time.
Right now, Xbox Insiders can only use Auto SR when the console is docked, and for good reason:
Docked gaming means larger screens and higher resolutions, where drops in image quality are more noticeable or where some games struggle to maintain smooth FPS. That’s exactly the problem Auto SR was designed to solve, so we’ll start the preview with docked mode where we hope players will see the most value.
If you want to try it, sign up for the Xbox Insider Programthen update your system. You’ll know you have the update if you see a new Auto SR tab in the Game Bar. Enable it from there and you should get higher frame rates without sacrificing visual acuity.
