The organization behind the Academy Awards released new rules for the Oscars on Friday, including several addressing the use of generative artificial intelligence.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said only performances “credited in the film’s legal billing and demonstrably performed by humans with their consent” will be eligible for the Academy Awards. Similarly, the academy said scripts must be “of human authorship” to be eligible.
The academy also said it has the right to request more information about a film’s use of AI and “human authorship.”
These rule changes come while an independent film with an AI-generated version of Val Kilmeras AI “actress” Tilly Norwood still in the headlinesand how new video models are causing at least some filmmakers to make broad statements of despair.
