If there’s a problem in the game that I can’t stand, it’s controller stick drift. It’s an issue that I think most players have experienced at some point, and not only is it incredibly annoying, but it also hinders competitive play.
Lever drift is sometimes caused by a buildup of dirt around the lever bases or a lack of proper calibration. These problems can usually be fixed.
But when the problem is deeper, lever drift can be the cause of a full driver update. I’ve been through this exact scenario at least a couple of times and in both cases I ended up purchasing a new Xbox controller to use with my gaming PC.
I know, it’s a waste. But when lever drift can’t be fixed with a deep cleaning or stock recalibration, the next best solution is often to replace the internal components. The worst thing is that the problem may not be resolved once those updates are made.
DriftGuard Cracks Xbox Controller Joystick Calibration
DriftGuard is a third-party application that began its journey in 2024, focusing on PS4 and PS5 controllers. It is an understatement to say that it has been a great help to PlayStation users.
However, until recently, it has been much less useful for Xbox controllers due to specific hardware restrictions. that’s now changed with latest DriftGuard advancement.
HISTORICAL BREAKTHROUGH: UNMATCHABLE CALIBRATION We’ve done it! Many thanks to Lewy20041 and @driftguardapp for this historic hardware discovery. We have unlocked the latest manual and automatic joystick calibration for any Xbox controller. It is UNMATCHABLE and PERMANENT written… pic.twitter.com/bwX7n9c73QMay 19, 2026
As mentioned in team member DriftGuard’s announcement post @modifier89have “Unlocked the latest manual and automatic joystick calibration for any Xbox controller.“
What is better? Changes to your Xbox controller made through DriftGuard are irreparable and permanent. By storing the calibration in the controller memory, the changes cannot be undone with an official controller update.
It seems that the new solution discovered by DriftGuard works on all Xbox controllerswhether wired or wireless. I’m talking Xbox 360Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, Xbox Elite V1/V2/Core and more.
As modyfikator89 points out in a follow-up post (translated from Polish), “All Xbox controllers can be calibrated.“

More Xbox-related features are said to be coming to DriftGuard in the future, but for now, this new joystick drifting solution is expected to come to the steam version in “a week or even less.“You can also use Free DriftGuard Calibration via Browser.
I don’t expect the new features to completely fix joystick drift on an Xbox controller with broken internal hardware, but hey, it’s worth a try before you go out and buy a new gamepad or send your old one in for repair.
👉 What is a Hall effect driver? Do I really need one?
Microsoft has its own recalibration tool available through Xbox Accessories application. Unfortunately, it only works on Xbox Wireless Controllers and Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controllers.
I’ve used the Microsoft app in the past and it never manages to recalibrate correctly. Let me know in the comments section below if you’ve experienced anything similar.
Windows Central’s take on DriftGuard’s Xbox trailer
What is that sound? That’s millions of Xbox players screaming with joy now that their controller is no longer broken. At least, that’s what I hope will happen if DriftGuard actually nails its Xbox recalibration components.
I gave DriftGuard a try and it seemed to find some calibration issues that the official Xbox tool didn’t catch. However, my controller is in good condition, so it’s hard to know exactly how much it has changed.
In any case, anything that works better than Microsoft’s official recalibration tool is more than welcome. I urge you to give DriftGuard a try for free via official website. If you like it enough, the paid version of Steam helps out the developers and unlocks some extra features.
