Google is setting the stage for the Android version of Apple Handoff, with the new “Continue On” feature in Android 17 set to let you seamlessly move tasks between Android devices.
Revealed during Talk “Android News” at Google I/O 2026 and more details in a developer page“Continue” is a part of Android 17 that has to do with the ability to move forward and back on your Android devices without finishing the task you are working on.
As Google explains:
Continue allows users to launch an Android app on an Android device and then transition to another device in their Android ecosystem, continuing the user journey they started.
The feature will allow your Android device activities to appear on other devices connected to the same accounts.
Google says this is designed to work bidirectionally, but will “initially” only work between Android phones and tablets. An activity from your phone will appear on your tablet in the dock, an example is the ability to open the same document in Google Docs from your tablet using the “transfer” suggestion that appears on the tablet dock.
Another example shows the ability to do this with a web browser, with an email in Gmail being delivered to Chrome on a tablet, opening directly in that same email.
Although limited at launch, the concept here is quite similar to Apple’s Handoff that allows iPhone owners to hand off tasks to the iPad or Mac, which was announced in 2014.
Google says It will be available in Android 17 “RC1”, presumably referring to a release candidate. The latest planned beta version of Android 17 happened almost a month ago, but a The “.1” update would be unprecedented.
