In a surprising turn of events, Blizzard has added a new Warcraft 3: Legacy option of battle.net. Provides access to the original. 1.29 client of The frozen throne it was, and it is evident that it is for offline and LAN game only.
To access the Legacy version, go to the Warcraft 3: Reforged page in your Battle.net client. Click the menu above the game’s Play button and select Legacy 1.29.
Why is Warcraft 3: Legacy so important?
Before Blizzard completely redeemed itself with the amazing Diablo 2: Risen remake in 2021, had a generational error Warcraft 3: Reforged in 2020.
I was one of the “lucky” ones who got to review Warcraft 3: Reforged About six years ago, and it didn’t take long to see why fans had bombed Metacritic user score to a horrible 0.5 out of 10 (The game still has a 0.6 user rating all these years later.)
I gave the game 3/5 stars, which, in retrospect, was probably overly generous. Warcraft 3: Reforged arrived with core problems. Functions were missing. The campaigns were changed. The character animations were clunky. The network was not working properly.
The worst of all? Blizzard overwrote the classic Warcraft 3 client with the Reforged client, effectively destroying the myriad custom games that were a big draw for so many real-time strategy enthusiasts.
If you wanted to play classic Warcraft 3, you had to do it with a solution that involved beta versions.
Blizzard tried to save some of its work with a Patch 2.0 reformed a couple of years ago, but it failed to revive the game’s appeal.
Is Warcraft 3: Legacy really what it seems to be?
I haven’t had a chance to access the new Legacy version of Warcraft 3 yet, but there’s a lot of talk on the Blizzard forums about its status.
As a user, Pebblepoints out, there are still some outstanding problems.
Some wonder why the download size of Warcraft 3: Legacy is 6.25GB when the original patch 1.27 was less than 2GB.
Other user wonders why Blizzard didn’t use patch 1.31, which was also pre-forged. Patch 1.31 was 64-bit and added several new features, while 1.29 is 32-bit. This excludes its execution on Mac.
Windows Central’s opinion
I’m inclined to agree with some members of the Blizzard forum that this seems more like fan service than a restoration of the old Warcraft 3.
Many of the same old problems that arose after Reforged persist in Legacy and it lacks online play.
Still, this could be a first step towards reviving Warcraft 3 through “official” channels. I don’t think there would be much of an outcry if Reforged was completely forgotten, but I could be wrong.
