Anthropic takes $5 billion from Amazon and promises $100 billion in cloud spending in return

anthropic announced Monday that Amazon agreed to invest another $5 billion, bringing Amazon’s total investment in the company to $13 billion. Anthropic, for its part, agreed to spend more than $100 billion on AWS over the next 10 years, getting up to 5 GW of new computing capacity to train and run Claude.

The deal echoes an agreement Amazon reached with OpenAI just two months ago, when it joined a $110 billion financing round – contributing $50 billion – which valued the ChatGPT maker at a pre-money valuation of $730 billion. That deal was also structured in part as cloud infrastructure services rather than cash.

At the center of this deal are Amazon’s custom chips: Graviton (a low-power CPU) and Trainium (an Nvidia competitor and AI accelerator chip). Anthropic’s deal specifically covers Trainium2 through Trainium4 chips, although Trainium4 chips are not currently available. The latest chip, Trainium3, was launched in December. On top of that, Anthropic has secured the option to purchase capacity in future Amazon chips as they become available.

We will see if this news is a preview of Anthropic announcing a new round of financing. Venture capitalists have reportedly been offering capital to the AI company in a deal that value it at 800 billion dollars or more.
