Anthropic has released its latest AI model with Claude Opus 5. The new version arrives approximately two months after the previous Opus model was updated, matching Anthropic’s previous update cadence.
Anthropic says Opus 5 offers intelligence close to Fable 5 for half the cost
Anthropic currently offers many AI models under the Claude umbrella.
The three main models are Haiku (the smallest and cheapest), Sonnet (medium size and price) and Opus (the largest and most expensive of the three).
Today’s release updates Claude’s Opus model since version 4.8 to version 5.
Anthropic describes Opus 5 as a “thoughtful and proactive model that approaches the frontier intelligence of Claude Fable 5 at half the price.”
Fable 5 is the published version of Mythos with safeguards, which Anthropic originally retained due to its cybersecurity capabilities. Fable 5 remains Anthropic’s most capable model.

Opus 5 is designed for everyday use – it works more efficiently than other models. It is the new default model of Claude Max and the most powerful model of Claude Pro.
Anthropic is aiming for two more releases today in addition to Claude Opus 5:
- Tool changes mid-conversation on the Claude Platform. Within a conversation, developers can now change which tools Claude can use without invalidating the message cache.
- Automatic reservations in the API. Users can now choose to have requests flagged by our security classifiers in Opus 5 (or Fable 5) be automatically routed to another model. With automatic fallbacks enabled, API requests are always routed to the best available model by default instead of being blocked.
Prices and availability
Anthropic says Claude Opus 5 is available today for all platforms. Opus 5 costs $5/million input token and $25/million output token, matching the price of Opus 4.8.
