When Apple initially launched Apple Intelligence, the company was quite openly against the idea of creating a Siri chatbot. Now things have changed a bit and it is rumored that the company is implement a Siri app in iOS 27, so users can chat with the next generation of Apple Foundation models. While it’s a great starting point, I think there’s a better idea to take advantage of here.
Messages is the answer
People already use an app created by Apple every day to talk. Why not use it for AI?
It wouldn’t be so inconceivable to have a ‘Siri’ conversation in your Messages app. The only real problem would be wanting to split the conversation history, but it probably wouldn’t be too difficult to add a conversational AI app switcher to separate the conversation chains.
But that’s just the beginning. Why not incorporate third parties?
Apple, at least so far, has squandered its potential to be a dominant AI platform. Sure, you download AI apps in the App Store, but Apple doesn’t own part of that experience yet.
However, you could do it with iMessage.
There are already several applications of conversational AI that probably depend on mac mini server farms to provide an experience through iMessage. In particular, Put.
Apple also offers Business Chat. If you’ve ever contacted a company’s support line in the Messages app, you’ve probably experienced this. However, it’s not exactly developer friendly.
If Apple, with iOS 27, were to introduce a new API for developers to launch conversational AI apps in iMessage, it would unlock a lot of potential.
Instead of having to open the Claude app to manage your remote Claude Code session, what if you could do it from Messages? Or, if you have a financial management app with an AI chatbot, what if you could text it about your expenses in iMessage, instead of having to think about opening the app?
I’m sure several developers wouldn’t want to give up their control. I can’t imagine a world where you no longer need a ChatGPT app. That said, for tasks where Messages would create real convenience, I think it could be a big hit.
In addition, it offers developers a broader user base, since the user will see it on their iPhone, iPad, Waterproofand apple watchinstead of where they installed the app (usually only on the iPhone).
