Schmigadoon! wins 4 Tony Awards, including Best Musical
The 79th Annual Tony Awards Just Wrapped and Apple TV’s Broadway Adaptation Schmigadoon! won 4 wins, including Best Musical.
With tonight’s wins, Apple TV joins Netflix in achieving EGOT status, meaning the streaming service has now won at least one award in all four major American entertainment awards: an Emmy for television, a Grammy for music, an Oscar for film and a Tony for Broadway theater.
Interestingly, while Netflix had to wait about 12 years to achieve EGOT status, since its first three Emmy wins for house of cards in 2013 to last year’s Tony for Stranger Things: The First Shadow, Apple got there in about half the time, starting with its first Emmy wins with The morning program in 2020, and completing the set tonight with Schmigadoon!.
The Broadway adaptation of Schmigadoon! It was nominated for 12 awards in total and took home 4 awards. Here is the complete list of Tony Awards Schmigadoon!:
- Best Musical
- Best book of a musical
- Best Original Score
- Better orchestrations
Schmigadoon! premiered on Apple TV in 2021 and ran for two seasons, ending in 2023. In January 2024, the show’s creator Cinco Paul confirmed that, although the third season had already been written with 25 new songs, Apple decided not to move forward with it.
Curiously, Pablo said Entertainment Weekly earlier this year that there had “been some conversations” about bringing the show back. With tonight’s wins, fans may have a little more reason to hope that Schmigadoon! It’s not finished yet.
