Valve has announced the launch of Counterattack 2 Premier Season 5. The update reintroduces Cache to the active duty map pool and changes how C4 burst damage is calculated.
It also adds new Armory sticker and weapon collections. Following the IEM Cologne 2026 Major, the update features five community maps, engine improvements, and several fixes. Cache has now replaced Overpass in the Active Duty rotation.
Cache Returns to Active Duty and C4 Damage Changes
Cache has returned to the competitive Counter-Strike lineup after being reintroduced in CS2 earlier this year. Players have had the opportunity to practice the map in both casual and competitive modes, and it is now part of the Premier rotation.
The flyover has been removed from the active duty group. The current set of Active Duty maps now includes Cache along with the other seven maps used for competitive play.
The main gameplay change for Season 5 is a complete overhaul of how C4 bomb explosion damage is calculated. Instead of dealing damage instantly throughout the explosion radius, the explosion now spreads as a shockwave from the bomb site.
Key details of this change include:
- Damage values are pre-calculated through simulation and integrated directly into each map.
- The shockwave expands rapidly from the center of the explosion instead of causing damage immediately.
- The wave dissipates in the corners and does not pass through the walls.
- Players who are further away have a better chance of surviving if they flee.
- A preview appears on the player’s health bar, showing how they would fare if the bomb exploded.
This health bar preview is the most significant change for competitive play. Previously, players had to rely on their knowledge of the game to estimate whether they would survive a bomb explosion.
Even professional players sometimes made mistakes, costing them and their teams rounds. The new preview allows players to confirm their safety before making decisions to hold positions or attempt to save.
New armory collections and five community maps
Valve has added the Arabesque and Spy Tech weapon collections to CS2 Armory. Both collections were developed through Valve’s Call to Armory 2025 community design initiative.
- Arabesque features intricate designs and golden textures, evoking themes of royalty.
- Spy Tech offers modern, line-based technological designs.
Two new sticker collections have also been introduced:
- Fruits and Vegetables, and
- Car racing.
The following collections have been removed from the Armory:
- Train 2025 and collections of sporting and field weapons, as well as
- Sugarface 2 and Elemental Craft sticker collections.
Season 5 features five community-created maps for CS2, available in multiple game modes:
- Rock,
- half-timbered, etc.
- Shelter can be played in Competitive, Casual and Deathmatch modes, while
- Debris and
- The Dorado is available in Wingman mode.
These new maps replace Warden, Stronghold, Alpine and Sanctum, which have been removed from all game modes.
Engine update, performance improvements and what players should do
Valve has updated CS2 to the latest version of Source 2. The patch notes did not specify any visual or performance improvements resulting from the engine update.
Additional improvements include better performance when the scoreboard is displayed using the Tab key, several visual bug fixes, and clipping changes on all maps.
The scoreboard performance boost is especially useful for solo queue players who frequently check their kill rate during matches.
For CS2 players preparing for Season 5, start by restarting Steam to ensure the update downloads correctly:
- Review cache calls and strategies if you return to the map after a break.
- Practice with the C4’s new explosion mechanic in casual or training mode before jumping to Premier.
- Visit the Armory to see the Arabesque and Spy Tech collections.
- Try out the new community maps in Competitive or Wingman queues. If you want to trade weapon skins from rotating collections, check their current values beforehand, as demand may change when collections leave the Armory.
The Counter-Strike 2 Season 5 update is now available on Steam. Players who have the game installed will receive the update automatically. Those who haven’t started CS2 recently will need to let the update download completely before they can begin pairing.
Valve has not announced any map pool changes or major adjustments beyond what is listed in the Season 5 patch notes.
