In addition to aiding alignment, that LED has four light patterns:

light pattern Description: The device is…
Pulsating white light Charging.
Flashing red light Run out of battery.
Fast flashing white light Firmware update.
Steady red light Running on critically low battery.

Double-tapping “firmly” on the Fitbit Air activates the status light:

  • White light: Your device is working and the battery level is between 20% and 100%.
  • Red light: Your battery level is below 20%. Please charge your device soon.
  • Without light: The device is turned off or without battery.

That gesture is also used to silence Smart Wake and the one-time alarms you set within the Google Health app.
