However, there is a growing group of alternatives that challenge that pricing structure by offering a near-luxury experience at a noticeably lower cost. A compact made in the United States electric SUV stands out in particular, undercutting key rivals such as the BMW iX3 by around $10,000 while offering a similarly refined cabin, strong performance figures and a high level of standard equipment. It manages to combine modern design with a tech-packed interior and solid everyday practicality.

That value proposition extends beyond simple price. With multiple powertrain configurations ranging from a single-motor setup to high-performance dual-motor variants, it offers efficiency-focused driving and excellent straight-line performance. While it may not lead its class in maximum range, it offers enough capacity for most buyers, reinforcing its position as a compelling alternative for those seeking luxury without the typical cost of entry.

Compact electric SUVs aren’t particularly affordable, especially when they wear a luxury badge on the hood. Many of the options in this segment cost more than $60,000. However, there is an American option that undercuts regular players, and not because of a small option. Despite being equally luxurious as its rivals, the Cadillac Optiq is a much more palatable price tag.

If you’re shopping for a luxury compact SUV, the new BMW iX3 may have caught your eye. However, it comes with a starting price of $61,500. The Cadillac Optiq, which competes in the same segment, costs almost $10,000 less. Despite this huge price difference, the Optiq feels like an equally successful luxury SUV, one that comes packed with high-quality materials and plenty of modern, innovative tech features.

The Optiq used to come standard with a dual-motor all-wheel drive configuration. However, for the 2026 model year, Cadillac has introduced a single-motor model with rear-wheel drive, which has helped keep its starting price relatively low. All-wheel drive models also have a fairly significant power increase. For 2027, changes have been kept to a minimum, with the only real update being a handful of new colors.

Many modern luxury electric vehicles try to stand out by breaking with convention, which can sometimes backfire and come across as kitsch. In fact, Cadillac has done a fantastic job of making the Optiq feel edgy on the inside while still maintaining the elegant, upscale vibe that luxury SUVs should give off. It’s also exceptionally practical and comes packed with luxurious features.

Interior dimensions and comfort.

The Optiq is very practical and offers a spacious cabin with plenty of space for passengers and cargo. While not class-leading, space in the rear is more than ample for adults, although some taller folks may feel a little cramped. The slope of the Optiq’s roofline looks fantastic on the outside, but it reduces cargo space a bit, although 26 cubes are enough for most people shopping in this segment.

Cadillac uses several nice materials in the Optiq’s cabin, from brushed metals to textured fabrics. The entire interior is pleasant to the touch and the build quality is excellent here. There are also some great comfort features available, including massaging front seats with adjustable lumbar support, 126-color ambient interior lighting, and quilted upholstery.

Infotainment and technology

Atop the dashboard of every Optiq is a massive 33-inch screen. This display has become standard on many Cadillac electric products. The screen acts as both an infotainment screen and a digital gauge cluster. The graphics are incredibly sharp and the system responds quickly and smoothly to inputs.

Unfortunately, Cadillac has decided to no longer offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, claiming that people don’t really need them. Instead, the system is based on Google, which means you can download many third-party apps that you might want to use anyway. Each Optiq comes with a 5G wireless hotspot and an impressive 19-speaker AKG sound system. Higher models also have a head-up display.

One of the most important figures when talking about an electric car is its autonomy. If you’re looking to maximize range, then the new BMW iX3 is definitely ahead of the Optiq, with the EPA estimating it will go over 400 miles on a single charge. However, it’s still $10,000 more expensive and the Cadillac still achieves great range on a single charge.

As standard, all models except the V Series come equipped with the single-motor rear-drive configuration. This engine has a good 315 horsepower. Dual-motor models send power to the front and rear axles, generating a combined 440 horsepower. With this configuration, the compact SUV can reach up to 60 miles per hour in just 4.3 seconds. The V Series boosts power to 519 horsepower and accelerates to 60 miles per hour in an astonishing 3.5 seconds.

The Optiq finds a truly fantastic balance between driving experience and comfort. When cruising, things stay exceptionally quiet and you’ll notice how fantastic the ride quality is. Put your foot down a winding back road and you’ll find that it handles very well for an SUV and the steering has good weight too.

Efficiency, range and load

No Optiq comes close to 434 miles traveled by the BMW iX3. Even single-engine models are only rated at 317 miles. However, considering the Optiq’s much cheaper price and the fact that most other EVs in this segment hover around 300 miles of range, we think the Cadillac does quite well.

Cadillac provides each Optiq with an 85 kWh battery. The American automaker says that when connected to a DC fast charger, it can add up to 79 miles of range in 10 minutes.

Cadillac’s Optiq offers 90 percent of the iX3 experience for much less money

It’s obvious that the iX3 outperforms the Optiq in a couple of different areas, particularly range. However, when you consider that the Optiq starts at $10,000 less than the iX3, the gap between the two doesn’t really seem that big. Cadillac’s electric compact SUV offers an excellent driving experience, plenty of interior space and a host of modern tech features, and its range is quite reasonable. In our opinion, it’s a great starting point for those looking to avoid the $60,000 price tag of BMW’s new electric vehicle.
