Google is preparing to let Gemini-powered agents control your computer and “organize your files,” in a move to rival Claude Cowork.
Currently, the Gemini app for macOS consists of two key features: a native chat interface reminiscent of the web app and an alternative space shortcut to open Gemini from anywhere. The latter has the advantage of allowing you to share your current window with Gemini, offering the AI visual context of your current task.
Upon closer inspection by our APK Insight team, it appears that Google has plans to expand Gemini’s presence on Mac through the new use of agent-powered computers. Those who have tried Claude Cowork in recent months are probably familiar with that tool’s ability to take direct control of your computer to perform specific tasks.

The first three prompts heavily emphasize the ability to use Gemini to organize files from your Mac and bring them into Google Workspace apps. Each of these are aspects at play for productivity in a post-Claude Cowork world. Under the hood, they will use the Screen Access and Accessibility features to allow Gemini to see your screen and control your mouse/keyboard. Meanwhile, the fourth message moves the focus away from your local computer and switches to Google apps like Meet, Docs, and Gmail.
Taken as a collection, these indications point to Google allowing Gemini to do more work on its behalf. That said, it’s interesting to imagine that this Gemini agent for macOS would have a broader set of capabilities than what’s available for Android. So far, only a small subset of Android devices, such as the Galaxy S26 series, can ask Gemini to automate simple tasks within the app, such as ordering food.
By comparison, Google seems poised to make Gemini for macOS a suitable competitor to Claude Cowork. Honestly, this work is long overdue, considering Google has been experimenting with this type of agency work since last year. Using the Gemini 2.5 computer advance.
