Google Maps adds larger street labels to Android Auto

In a useful new tweak rolling out now, Google Maps now shows more prominent street labels in Android Auto.

Google Maps has long shown street labels along each road, but outside of the next turn, they are very small. That’s changing, at least on Android Auto, as Google is rolling out a new change that shows larger street labels in Google Maps on streets adjacent to your route.

This change is very prominent when you hit the road, with labels appearing in blue with a white outline for roads that are part of your route (this is also a slight redesign), while roads adjacent to your route are gray with the same white outline.

While this may not be useful on all routes, it is certainly useful if you are trying to get around and need to know which streets you are passing through. It is unfortunate that this only happens when navigation is active. If the map is simply open, larger labels are disabled. It would be useful if it appeared on streets adjacent to the one you are currently on when navigation is not active, as that is when that information could be most useful.
