Google is increasing the video quality to Google meeting users with high-resolution screens when accessing the service through a web browser. The update is most noticeable in meetings with three or more participants and is currently rolling out to all users. The process is expected to conclude in the coming weeks.
What’s changing Google Meet video quality on the web?
Google claims that the update “provide higher quality video for users with high-resolution displays on the web.” The focus is primarily on multi-party calls, where video tile size and screen density make resolution differences more noticeable compared to one-to-one calls.
Achieving this higher quality requires more bandwidth than the previous default. Google has not specified the minimum connection speed needed to access the full upgrade nor has it clarified which screen resolutions qualify for the enhanced video output.
Bandwidth management and availability
For users with slower or unstable connections, Meet now automatically adjusts video quality based on available bandwidth instead of sticking to a fixed resolution. Those with solid connections and high-resolution monitors should notice an improvement without needing to change any settings. Users with limited connections will still see video quality that matches what their bandwidth can support.
This change applies to Google Meet on the web. Google has not confirmed whether the update extends to hardware room systems or dedicated Meet hardware devices. The update does not affect the Google Meet mobile app for Android or iOS.
The rollout has begun and Google expects it to be available to all eligible users in the coming weeks. No action is required to receive the update.
