After tests in marchGoogle Messages is now rolling out a new “Tap to Compose” behavior for Smart Replies that helps prevent accidental sending.
Previously, tapping a smart reply above the compose field would send it immediately. Some users turned off the feature entirely to avoid accidentally sending a message.
Google is now addressing that with “Tap to Compose,” where selecting a Smart Reply adds it to the text box. As such, you must manually press the submit button, with the possibility of making further edits before doing so.
You need to enable Tap to Compose by going to Settings > Suggestions & Actions (which has been renamed in recent weeks) to see the new “Suggestions” menu at the top. At launch, the default behavior is still “Tap to Send.”

We are seeing this nice improvement in quality of life implemented with the latest stable version (20260522_00_RC00) from Google Messages for Android.
