TL;DR
- Google is working on bringing back the old “Basic Crop” video preset with the new name “Auto Crop.”
- Spotted in Google Photos v7.83.0, the tool would live within a renamed “Quick Fix” (previously “Automatic”) section.
- The auto trim feature will automatically trim excess footage from the start and end of a video.
Google renewed the video editing experience in Google Photos last year, but the overhaul came at the cost of several convenient features. Among the victims was the “Presets” tab, which allowed users to apply one-touch changes such as “Basic Cut” and “Slow Motion.” Fortunately, it looks like Google is preparing to resurrect the core functionality of the Basic snipping tool under a new name: Auto Snipping.

In previous versions of Google Photos, before the redesign of the photo and video editing experience, this is what the Presets section looked like:

This section and the tools it contains have been completely missing from the redesigned interface until now.
However, in Google Photos v7.83.0.943371825, we have detected that the functionality behind the basic crop preset is returning as “Auto Crop”.
Within the video editing interface in this version of Google Photos, Google renamed the “Auto” section to “Quick Fix.”
Within Quick Fix, we managed to activate the new “Auto Crop” feature, which behaves the same as the basic crop preset.

As the name implies, auto trim automatically trims a video to its key moments in the middle, removing extra footage from the beginning and end of the clip. However, it doesn’t cut or trim videos anywhere in the middle, so if you have filler parts in there, you’ll have to cut those sections manually. As such, the auto crop feature will still be useful for quick cropping, but not for detailed edits.
Auto crop is not currently available in Google Photos. We’ll keep you posted when we know more. Google Photos is also working on other features, such as making it It’s easier to capture frames from videos..
