Sometimes app changes are controversial, with as many advocates as users actually seeming to resent them. But there are also those changes that almost no one seems to like, and that seems like how we would have to characterize the “shiny” effect. Google Photos used to let us know when we can create a sticker from an image. If you’ve been hating this design element since its debut, we have great news for you as Google is finally working on a way to disable it.

Google Photos first brought us this feature last year on iOS, before Android finally caught up back in February. When you’re viewing an image in your Photos gallery, after a few moments you’ll see an animated border that’s supposed to ask you to hold down if you want to create a sticker.

In fact, you don’t have to look far to find complaints about brightness on the Google Photos support forums, and users are reporting it. it gives them headaches and makes them feel nauseous. Maybe it’s one thing if you’re a big sticker user, but for the rest of us, this has proven to be an unwanted distraction.
This isn’t available yet, but in Google Photos version 7.82, we can now see Google preparing to offer an option that will allow the uninterested among us to finally turn off this effect:

Once it’s ready to deploy, you’ll find the new option in the app. Settings > Preferences > See photos.

Turning off the option won’t completely free you from the brightness, however; You’ll still see it if you hold down on an image and are trying to make a sticker. But this will prevent the app from constantly showing it to you when you just want to look at your photos in peace.
