TL;DR
- Google Photos is working on a new set of categories for collage templates.
- Ultimately, these categories may arrive alongside developing border editing tools.
- There are also hints of a new AI-powered video feature “Soba.”
Are you really making the most of everything? Google Photos can do? In addition to being a comfortable way to see all our photographs, or take some basic editionsPhotos is packed with great tools that you may not even know about. Today we take a look at an upcoming change to one of them, plus a mysterious new tool we’re just starting to learn about.
On the Create page in Google Photos, you’ll find the app collage tool — this handy feature lets you artistically combine multiple photos into one, perfect for sharing with friends, printing, or posting on social media. We were already anticipating a big change here: Photos is getting ready to let you edit the appearance of borders in collages. While that one isn’t available yet, we already have another tweak in progress to add to our list, as Photos prepares to group collage options by theme.
You may remember that when we saw work on the border options, we also saw the collages UI prepare a new button to view available templates. When it’s finally ready to roll out, it now looks like Photos will organize collage templates into the following categories:
- Presented
- Grid
- Movie
- Classic
- Love
- Celebration
- Floral
- Decoration
- shapes
Considering the alternative has simply been scrolling through a long carousel, dividing the options into a handful of convenient groups like that makes a lot of sense, and we’re eager to see Photos actually introduce it.
Finally, we have what could be a completely new tool added to the set of those already available in Photos:

Right now, we only have two things to go on: that name “Soba” and an icon that sure seems to imply an AI-powered video tool.
The problem is that it is still not even slightly functional and trying to access it just gives you an error message. We also have a photo-to-video AI tool in Photos, so it’s not immediately obvious to us what Soba could offer to differentiate itself. Hopefully we’ll soon be able to access it in at least a somewhat functional way, so we can start to narrow down what it actually does.
