Today we share with you the story of a court in Munich, Germany, which ruled that Ultimately, Google Should Be Accountable for incorrect information presented as part of AI-generated news summaries, such as AI Overviews. We contacted Google at the time, hoping to get their side of the story, and now the company has followed up with Android Authorityproviding a statement.

A Google spokesperson tells us:
We invest deeply in the quality of AI overviews to ensure that the vast majority of answers provide accurate information and are designed to reflect the information that exists on the web. We are carefully reviewing this decision, which is not yet final.
As the company points out, the German court’s decision is not necessarily final and is only part of a preliminary procedure, so the story may be far from over here.
Google admits, and admittedly has done so all along, that AI content like this is designed to be based on information found in web sources, and there’s always the chance that its systems will get that analysis wrong. That’s why he says users should double-check any truly critical information they want to trust.
Obviously, Google doesn’t want any misinformation that appears in AI overviews, and the company says it has policies in place to resolve incidents like this. It’s also trying to improve to avoid these types of failures in the first place.
A lot of that sounds relatively reasonable, but we’re also not the ones trying to clear our name after having our reputation tarnished by AI Overviews hallucinations. As more and more users turn to AI-powered search features for answers, will we see issues like this more frequently or will Google’s mitigation efforts manage to keep things under control?
