Kering, the fashion group behind Gucci, has announced a partnership with Google to develop luxury smart glasses, with a launch planned for 2027.
The glasses will run Android XR, Google’s platform for extended reality devices, including headsets and lightweight frames. Kering CEO François-Henri Pinault confirmed the target year to Reuters. No details on specifications, pricing or features have been shared.
What Android XR could bring to Gucci’s smart glasses
Android XR is Google’s dedicated platform for extended reality hardware, supporting multiple hardware partners in various form factors. Gucci glasses are expected to be among several devices running on this platform, which could eventually fit a range of prices and designs beyond the luxury segment.
The Android XR smart glasses are expected to include features such as notifications, navigation overlays, real-time translation, and AI assistant functionalities delivered through an optical display. Google has not confirmed which of these features will be part of the Kering model.
Why design can be the key differentiator
Early smart glasses, such as Google Glass, faced challenges gaining widespread acceptance, primarily due to their appearance. The partnership with Kering is based on the idea that a well-known luxury fashion brand can address the design problems that technology companies often struggle with.
Kering has not shared details about how the glasses will be distributed, whether through Gucci stores, Google hardware partners, or both.
Unresolved challenges
Battery life, camera, sensor privacy issues, and everyday practical utility remain unresolved issues for the smart glasses industry as a whole. Neither Google nor Kering have provided details on how Gucci glasses will address these challenges. A full product announcement is not likely to be made before the launch window in 2027.
