GTA 5 has sold approximately 1.8 million copies on PS5 in 2026 so far, including 387,000 copies on PlayStation in May alone, according to Alinea Analytics estimates. The game’s continued strong sales, despite its release more than a decade ago, demonstrate the financial runway that has allowed Rockstar delay GTA 6 several times without ceasing to generate income.
The PS5 sales figure aligns with Take-Two’s financial reports, which regularly note around 5 million additional units sold per quarter across all platforms.
When accounting for sales of PS4, PC, and both generations of Xbox, the 1.8 million estimate for PS5 fits within that broader total.
The best PS5 games of May 2026
Alinea’s estimates for May include GTA 5 as the fifth best-selling PS5 game of the month. The complete top five by estimated units sold includes:
- 007 First light with a million copies,
- Minecraft with 788,000,
- Lego Batman: The Dark Knight Legacy with 757,000,
- EA Sports FC 26 with 411,000,
- GTA 5 with 387,000.
How GTA Online revenue and continued GTA 5 sales are funding GTA 6
Beyond unit sales, GTA Online continues to generate a significant amount of money from microtransactions. While specific figures are rarely revealed, leaks have suggested that the game earns around $8.4 million each week.
Another leak from Rockstar indicated that approximately 97 percent of GTA Online’s revenue comes from console versions. This could be one of the reasons why A PC release for GTA 6 has yet to be confirmed. The continued strong sales of GTA 5 and continued revenue from GTA Online have given Rockstar a surprisingly long financial runway.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has repeatedly emphasized that Rockstar aims to “deliver perfection” with GTA 6, and the company has provided significant financial, creative, and human resources to support this goal.
Such a lengthy development process is rare in the industry, where most studios face pressure to release products on tighter schedules. GTA 6 is currently scheduled for a console release on November 19, 2026. A PC version has not been officially confirmed.
Sales expectations for GTA 6 are substantial. One industry analyst estimated that the game could sell up to 45 million copies on PS5 in its first week.
Furthermore, analysis of Rockstar North’s financial documents suggests that the studio has spent more than two billion dollars on development.
