Halo: Evolved Campaign premieres next month July 28, 2026and is trying to position itself as one of the most replayable Halo games of all time. Among its 42 skulls, which act as game modifiers, and a new Campaign Remix mode that randomizes those skulls so each match feels different, Halo Studios is clearly leaning heavily into replayability.
While I think those additions are great, it also feels like some key features of the Halo franchise have fallen by the wayside. I have to admit I’m a little gutted not to see them return.
A visual masterpiece that will fall short
First of all, thanks to @gruntdotapi on X (formerly Twitter)who was the first to bring this to my attention, but it looks like Halo Studios has posted a Q&A ahead of the game’s release, and boy, there’s a lot to go over. First of all, we now know that Campaign Evolved will not have Photo Mode or Cinema Mode. Given how good the game looks, it seems like a huge shame.
The game is built on a modified Halo: Reach engine with Unreal Engine 5 overlaid on top of it, so it’s hard not to wonder why no work was done to support the features that helped define the Halo community for years. Theater mode, machinima, screenshots, file sharing, and community creations all played a huge role in making Halo what it is today.
Another disappointment is that Custom customization options will not appear during cutscenes.. Considering the game includes custom skins, it seems like a missed opportunity to allow players to see their own Spartan reflected throughout the campaign experience.
Players should also not expect a public demo before launch.according to the questions and answers. While not every Halo game offers one, it’s still unfortunate for fans hoping to get hands-on time before release.
The enigma of replayability
What disappoints me the most, however, is that Halo: Campaign Evolved seems to be built around replayability, but as far as we know, it seems to be missing one of the most iconic replay-based features of Halo: The Master Chief Collection. At least based on what we’ve seen so far, there appears to be no campaign score, campaign time, or leaderboards associated with it.
For a game that encourages players to repeat missions with different combinations of skulls and modifiers, that seems like a major omission. Having global leaderboards where players could compare scores, compete for the fastest completion times, and compete against each other would have added another layer of long-term engagement.
One and done: no post-launch support?
Unfortunately, in the aforementioned Halo Waypoint Q&AHalo Studios has also confirmed that Halo: Campaign Evolved is a one-off game, and players should not expect any content additions after launch; Honestly, that just sucks. As it stands, Halo: Campaign Evolved seems to be missing some of the franchise’s most beloved replayability and community features, and I’m gutted.
What do you think? Is this a huge missed opportunity for Campaign Evolved or do you not think it matters? Let me know in the comments and be sure to participate in our survey!
