I canceled Lightroom and tried Darktable: these 4 features convinced me


Canceling a Lightroom subscription seems easy until you have to look for something else. Most Alternatives Look Too Much Like Adobe Lightroom close enough to feel like a copy, or so different that they’re too much to take in at once. Darktable can be overwhelming, and I won’t pretend the first few hours were uneventful. What kept me going was realizing that the things you do differently are important.

Darktable treats light just like your camera sensor does

You can fix shadows without making the image look flat.

Darktable works with light the same way a camera sensor captures it. Is gross physical values without any early manipulation. This is very important when shooting in low light, because the software postpones any screen-specific adjustments until the end of editing. This will keep the underlying data intact.

Is easy to exit Lightroom because it will compress that raw data from the beginning using old curve-based processing. The problem with doing it that way is that it permanently breaks the relationship between how bright a pixel is and how saturated its color is. You’ll feel this especially when trying to rescue a destroyed sky or bring out crushed blacks.

Those Highlights and Shadows sliders can only do so much before things start to look crunchy and over-processed, with flat gray midtones and ugly halos creeping around high-contrast edges.

Instead of giving you a one-click solution for clipped highlights, Darktable handles the issue through dedicated modules that work on the image even before it has been fully processed from the RAW file. The Highlight Reconstruction module analyzes which color channels have faded and reconstructs the missing information from what is still intact.

For the shadow side, Tone Equalizer is the module that really sets Darktable apart. A typical shadow slider lifts everything up indiscriminately, which flattens the contrast and makes the entire image look muddy.

One of the biggest changes when moving from Lightroom to Darktable is the control you get over local adjustments, thanks to its masking system. Other editors are leaning more toward AI-powered selection tools that try to guess what you want; Darktable doesn’t use any automated guessing for its primary masking, which means the selections take a little longer to set up.

The payoff is that you completely avoid the messy edge artifacts, unnatural halos, and lost details that AI selections tend to produce on anything with a complicated shape. Instead, you get a set of drawn and parametric masking tools that allow you to isolate regions based on actual color or luminance values.

Instead of painting broadly over an area, you can choose specific pixel properties to automatically create your selection from the color and luminance coordinates you define. Depending on the module you’re working on, you can restrict edits using Lab space channels like luminance, chroma, and hue, or work in scene-referenced RGB to directly target raw color values.

If you’re trying to recover a destroyed sky, a magnification factor slider allows you to push your parametric selections above the standard viewing limits to capture overexposed areas that tend to slip through. You can also view each color channel in grayscale or false color to confirm that your mask captures exactly what you want.

In Lightroom, several master sliders are used that work in a screen-referred pipeline. This basically means that the software takes the raw data from your camera and compresses it into something that a screen can display fairly early in the process. The problem is that once you do a lot of exposure and then try to get the highlights back, you get nasty side effects.

This is when you see flat gray halftones and digital halos around the edges, which make the image look processed rather than photographed.

Darktable works in a scene-referred linear workflow, where image data remains in an unlimited 32-bit floating point space during editing. Therefore, pixel values ​​map directly to the actual light intensities that your sensor recorded, as they existed in the real world. That space doesn’t have a hardtop, so you can push the exposure aggressively and the brightest parts of your image won’t be clipped or killed.

You first set your exposure and then use one of Darktable’s tone mapping modules to return everything to the visible range of your screen at the end of the process. The three main options are Filmic RGB, Sigmoid and AgX, and they are much more detailed than a compression curve.

You can try different editions without filling up your hard drive

Each new version is saved as a small file rather than a full copy.

When I started looking into alternatives to Lightroom, one of my biggest concerns was how to manage multiple edits of the same photo without having to dig through my hard drive. Darktable ended up completely surprising me with how it handles this.

Each has its own editing history, color profile and metadata, so they are completely separate and you don’t have the cost of storage. This is a great feature because it gives you a lot of room to experiment.

Each duplicate has its own version number and its own companion file, while the master edition is perfectly normal. You can try a completely different approach on each duplicate without any affecting the others.

You can run one through the AgX tone mapper to see how it handles dimming, and try another with the Sigmoid display transform for something more punchy and contrasty. That’s the kind of freedom you want but won’t get with Lightroom.


Darktable may not be for you

Darktable is not a direct replacement. There is logic to the interface, but it takes time to understand that logic, and some workflows that seem instantaneous in Lightroom will need more setup here. If you shoot casually and want quick results, the friction probably isn’t worth it. However, if you’re spending real money on a subscription and find yourself hitting the ceiling on highlight recovery or local adjustments, Darktable gives you tools that go further.
